Getting Your Butt Into Shape
Everyone wants a firm and toned butt like a certain celebrity. But, how do you get one when you can't afford $5,000 sessions with the trainer to the stars? Stay up late one night and you'll see tons of infomercials for products offering that elusive toned butt we long for. But, can you actually get the butt of your dreams with a daily five-minute workout tape or a gadget you use for ten minutes a day? Don't count on it. The reality is that getting a great butt takes time, good eating habits and working out your entire body.
The Butt Muscles
Your butt has three main muscles; the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. The gluteus medius is located near your hip and lies underneath the gluteus maximus. Every time you take a step, the gluteus medius contracts to hold your pelvis upright. The gluteus minimus lies under the gluteus medius and works with it. Both of these muscles also help you rotate your hip joint inwards. Your main butt muscle, the gluteus maximus, extends your hip joint.
Watch Your Diet
In addition to the muscular functions it performs, your butt is also one of the main storage areas for body fat. Consuming too many starchy carbohydrates, sugars and fats will work against you when trying to lose pounds in and reshape your butt. When working on toning and shaping your butt, try to lower the fat intake in your diet to realistic levels. There is no need to completely cut starchy carbohydrates, sugars and fats from your diet, but instead, be conscious of how much you are taking in and try to minimize it in realistic ways.
Exercise and Tone
Fitness experts worldwide agree that "spot reduction" does not work. Spot reduction refers to targeting one specific area of your body (like your butt) and being able to exercise only that body part and see the results you desire. So, in order to tone your butt, you are going to have to work on your overall body.
However, if you are looking to specifically tone and shape your butt, you can perform exercises as part of a regular exercise routine that are specifically for targeting and toning your butt muscles. Click on the links listed below for specific exercises you can do:
