Get Active to Promote Weight Loss
Most people cringe when they hear the word exercise. But, who says exercise has to be done by walking on a treadmill or lifting weights at the gym? There are many things you can do to get yourself active that are also fun!
People who are overweight or obese often have a difficult time with regular exercise, especially when first adding it to their routine. But, some normal everyday activity can help you get active without the exercise videos and trips to the gym. And getting active is an important factor in weight loss.
Fun Ways to Burn Calories
Below you will find a list of normal activities that you may not think of as exercise, but in reality are an excellent way to burn calories. Remember to take it slow at first, especially if you are just beginning to add fitness to your daily lifestyle.
- Golf - but, give the caddy the day off and instead walk and carry or pull your clubs. You'll get nearly twice as much exercise as you would in a cart.
- Garden - not only does gardening relieve stress, but working outside in your garden uses up more calories than walking 15-minute miles.
- Dance - take your significant other or a friend out and hit the dance floor. A night of dancing gives you a workout that is equivalent to doing moderate calisthenics.
- Play with your kids - not only is it a workout for you, but it is a treat for them. Take them outside and have a water fight or play tag.
- Hit the pool - but don't just take a relaxing soak. Grab your kids or invite over some friends and get a game of pool volleyball going. You'll have fun and great company while getting a workout.
- Rollerblade - grab a pair of skates and head to your local skating rink or outside trail. It's fun to do with friends or alone and a great workout for your legs.
- Jump - if you have access to a trampoline, they can be a great source of exercise and silly fun. Be sure to observe safety precautions while using it.
- Walk on the beach - if geography allows, take a walk in the sand. This is a great workout for your legs and the scenery is wonderful.
- Play fetch - if you have a dog, take them out to an area where you can let him off the leash and play catch with him. This will keep you active and be a great treat for your loyal pal.
- Go window shopping - visit different malls in the area and window shop while walking around them - take the stairs instead of the escalators when going to the second floor.
The above are just a few of the ways you can have fun and get active, in order to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Be sure to talk with your doctor about how long you can safely do each activity based on your weight and fitness level. Fitness is an extremely important part of any weight loss plan. So have fun, get active and lose weight!
